After finishing graduate school, I worked in a corporate job for 12 years. Starting July 2008 I have opted out and am trying out not working.

I absolutely loved my job but the only way to pursue the things I wanted to was to leave the job. And I wanted to do it before I turned 40.

The freedom to travel at a leisurely pace was one strong motivation in my decision to leave the corporate world. In my retirement blog I explore the implications of my sabbatical, and my travel blog is about the different aspects of travel that I am drawn towards.

57. On my mind

Chess and writing and chess writing for chessbase and reading Norman Mailer's The Spooky Art and then realizing that I am woefully unread in the classics no Mailer no Vonnegut no Melville no nothing and as if that is not enough there are so many Indian and South Asian novels of note waiting to be read and Jhumpa has written a new one called the Namesake and it is drizzling or raining all day and the dread makes for more IRROP days which keeps me busy and there my motherinlaw in the apartment which restricts mobility if nothing else though it does give more time for reading and I am plodding through CT Art 3.0 and that should help in chess tactics but of what practical value is that, I ask and shouldn't I be writing more instead maybe query a magazine or two and write some real stuff.

Well, the days are flying by.
