After finishing graduate school, I worked in a corporate job for 12 years. Starting July 2008 I have opted out and am trying out not working.

I absolutely loved my job but the only way to pursue the things I wanted to was to leave the job. And I wanted to do it before I turned 40.

The freedom to travel at a leisurely pace was one strong motivation in my decision to leave the corporate world. In my retirement blog I explore the implications of my sabbatical, and my travel blog is about the different aspects of travel that I am drawn towards.

78. Being a Tenant

My current apartment lease has a new clause. My landlord can give us a 90-day notice and ask us to leave. The apartment office has been showing our apartment to prospective buyers, who may want to buy the unit.

I really like the apartment, the rent and the proximity to work. Also, now that it's November, getting a notice would mean that we would have to pack and move in the Winter, in February.

Therefore, every day, I walk up to the apartment with some anxiety. If there is no envelope shoved under our door, that means that we have earned one more day wherein we can stay. Tomorrow, well, we will worry about tomorrow tomorrow.
