After finishing graduate school, I worked in a corporate job for 12 years. Starting July 2008 I have opted out and am trying out not working.

I absolutely loved my job but the only way to pursue the things I wanted to was to leave the job. And I wanted to do it before I turned 40.

The freedom to travel at a leisurely pace was one strong motivation in my decision to leave the corporate world. In my retirement blog I explore the implications of my sabbatical, and my travel blog is about the different aspects of travel that I am drawn towards.

Catching Up

Been a while since I updated this. The Lisboa trip caused part of the delay. Also, still no Internet at home. That causes a problem too.

Chess

Managed to win one Islanderfan game. What a struggle. How can this guy be only 1500? And he is defending well in the other game as well.

Hope I will have more updates now that I am back on track.

New ways to screw up

I hate making the same mistake twice. But I also find new ways to make mistakes. I was in RMPL yesterday. I parked my car and switched it off. Then I went about separating the Arilington Hts books from the RM books and I walked out.
Turns out I left the keys in the car. 4 days after boasting to someone that I couldn't lock myself out, I did just that. I have a spare key, but I was driving Rupal's car.
It was worse because I had the cell phone and the pager. And we don't have a phone at home! No way to contact Rupal and ask her to pick me up. So I started walking home. 3 miles, and tomorrow I have to leave for Lisbon.
I left a message for Rupal at work, at turns out she's still there! At 8 pm! She called me back in a few minutes and eventually I got picked up and used her key to get in. It was 9pm when we got home.
Oh well. I am getting old. Senility shouldn't be a surprise.

Net-chess

Wonder if I may have salvaged the cubswin game. He made another confident move, but I hope I got him.
Islanderfan is playing way above his 1500 strength, which is perplexing. As is conundrum. What's going on?
Because of the looming Lisbon visit, I am worried about forfeiting games by running out of time.
Wouldn't have happened if we had Internet connectivity at home.
Oh well.

What am I reading
Chess Books: Silman's Amateur's Mind
Not as clean of a book as I would have liked. Surprising since I am big Silman fan. But it could do with a few more diagrams.
Am reading A Writer's Workshop by Stephen Koch. Pragmatic stuff.
Also, Aimee Bender's The Girl in Flammable Skirt. Talk of whimsy.

Lombard
Been a while since I updated the log.
On Monday, we went back to Lombard. A nostalgic trip (after 14 days).
Our passcode still worked, so we went into the building. Not into the apartment though.
RA went to LCC and I went to W@W. Some okay stuff there.

Shucks, shucks, shucks. I hung a Bishop in the Cubswin game. I was clearly winning. A whole piece up and what not. Terrific pressure. Then I take some time out to castle and I hang a whole Piece!
Shucks, shucks, shucks

Okay, back to this blogging thing. Didn't remember it over the weekend, but did this morning.
Lots of reading over the weekend. Went to AHPL, a great library.

Alright, that's it for today. Won't post tomorrow or the day after. No internet access currently during weekends.
Weekend will be chess books and pizza. Not bad at all, actually

My thrid post in the same day disappeared. Is there a bit-bucket in the sky? I am still learning my way around this whole enterprise. How to change nicknames, how to post links etc. I will work it out. Eventually.

Got to post at least twice on the first day of your blogging. I am thinking of this as my "other" blog. The with-the-trainer-wheels blog. My real blog, I will start later. I wonder if all bloggers think like this. Who wants to believe that this is the best one is capable of?

Till later

BlogSpot. A good concept. And it's free. I might as well give it a twirl. Is Blogging a total waste of time? Why not try it and find out for oneself?
